Why I choose British-grown wedding flowers (And why they’ll always look better)

Why British-grown wedding flowers matter so much to me

Sustainability isn’t just part of my business, it’s part of how I live. From the food I eat to the clothes I wear, I always lean toward choices that are organic and sustainable. The same is true of my floral designs. When I create wedding flowers, I want them to feel like they truly belong in the moment: delicate, natural, and a little wild. Whilst some hate them, I’m a lover of the wonky stems with character and quirks. And for me, that begins with choosing to work with British-grown flowers.

It isn’t just a trend or a nice-to-have. Choosing seasonal, locally grown flowers is one of the most important parts of my style and values as a wedding florist. Here’s why.

Flowers with more character

Imported flowers are often grown for uniformity. They travel for miles before they arrive. Each stem looking exactly like the next. But nature isn’t uniform, and that’s what I love most about it. British flowers come with bends, twists, and quirks that give them character. Those so-called imperfections are what make my designs feel alive, full of movement, and unique to you.

Seasonal flowers look (and last) better

British flowers are led by the seasons, which means they are timeless and always at their natural best. What I love about using British-grown flowers is the surprises and varieties that you will never have seen before, and are unable to source via imported flowers. Not to mention the unbeatable quality and beautiful scent that comes with them.

Flowers aren’t meant to travel thousands of miles before reaching your bouquet. They should be cut straight from the field.

A more sustainable choice

Using locally grown flowers means fewer air miles, less packaging, and less intensive production. It supports Yorkshire British growers and keeps traditional varieties alive. For me, this isn’t about marketing, it’s about designing in a way that respects the earth as much as it celebrates it.

My style would suffer without British-grown flowers

I describe my floral style as delicate and ‘perfectly imperfect’, it’s as natural as it gets. That’s no accident. British flowers have a looseness and character you just can’t always find in imported stems. They make each wedding unique. They move differently, sit more naturally, and give arrangements that “grown here, grown now” feeling.

When I choose British flowers, I’m not just making a sustainable choice. I’m making a design choice that reflects who I am as a florist and what I believe your wedding flowers should be: individual, seasonal, and deeply connected to nature.
