How we transformed a blank venue space into a show-stopping wedding reception

Luxury wedding flowers Yorkshire

Some venues offer a magical outdoor setting, but the indoor spaces don’t always match. That was the case with this wedding: a woodland ceremony spot that felt like a fairytale, followed by a reception space that… didn’t.

The only room available felt a bit like a conference room. It had dark plain walls and not much atmosphere. But working alongside an incredible wedding planner and stylist Freya Croisdale Weddings, we saw the potential and transformed it into something characterful, joyful, and worthy of the setting outside.

Here’s how we turned it into a breathtaking wedding reception

1. We leaned into colourful flowers and styling to distract from the room’s plain architecture

Rather than trying to disguise the room, we gave it something to compete with: bold, joyful colour. Rich seasonal tones gave warmth and movement to the space, helping it feel more celebratory and less corporate.

The couple weren’t afraid to embrace something vibrant, and the result was floral designs that felt full of personality. We used every opportunity; luxury tableware by Wren Ark, colourful candles, and as many compotes bowls as we could fit. the idea was to draw the eye away from the room’s plain architecture and into something more lively.

2. We let the season lead the way

As always, we let the season do the talking. The flowers we used weren’t just colourful; they were grown, gathered, and picked with the time of year in mind, bringing that same natural spirit indoors. There’s something about using seasonal ingredients that helps ground a space and make it feel more connected to its setting, even if that space started life as a conference room.

3. We got Creative with the layout: The Serpentine Table

One of the biggest design decisions was the table shape. Rather than sticking with standard rounds or long rows, we opted for a serpentine layout; a soft, undulating curve that ran through the centre of the room. The perfect way to create an intimate wedding reception for their 30-guest wedding.

Why a serpenine table works:

  • It adds movement to a static room, drawing the eye through the space

  • It feels more intimate than separate circular tables, creating smaller zones for guests to connect

  • It creates a natural focal point; no need for extra installations when the table itself becomes a design feature

  • It opens up opportunities for creative floral placement, with the curve giving rhythm and pace to the arrangements

We designed the flowers to follow the curve of the table, with airy, gathered centrepieces and delicate details that gave each section its own little moment.

The result

What began as a plain, practical room became a thoughtful, expressive, and inviting wedding reception space. Guests were wow’ed as they walked into the room and so were the venue staff themself! The table design truly reflected the couple, the setting, and the season in a way that felt entirely intentional.

It’s a reminder that even the most uninspiring venue can be transformed with a bit of vision, trust, and a willingness to do things differently.

Whether you're working with a blank space or a dream venue, thoughtful floral design can bring it to life
